An acquaintance once transported two dozen walnut-sized cannabis balls wrapped in clear plastic wrap in his intestines from a steep ridge at the foot of the Himalayas, over bumpy roads to Delhi, and then second class at 11,000 feet via Frankfurt to Vienna.
He had swallowed each ball with great care, but by the 22nd he had become ill, almost souring the entire product with his bile, his stomach was quite bloated, and once the transparent film in his intestines had almost torn, and he had almost died, according to his friend.
To this day, I'm grateful that he didn't transport the sandalwood in his body. Although I don't know if the story about the 22nd cannabis ball is true or if this is actually the wood of the santalum album, the sandalwood tree. It certainly smells like sandalwood.
I believe sandalwood smells exactly like this wood. If this wood is indeed the wood of the sandalwood tree, then it will smell exactly like this.
The sandalwood tree is a semi-parasitic, evergreen tree that reaches heights of up to 20 meters in India. As a semi-parasite, it feeds only partially on its host trees, extracting nutrients and water from them with the help of special sucking organs called haustoria. The hosts then only partially die, at least according to certain sources.
The sandalwood tree. Half parasite, half tree.
You have to light it.
When you meditate.
My friend takes a drag on his cigarette. When I light the sandalwood, I'll know if it's real, I think, and place it on my desk.
When the column of smoke turns into a fine streak late at night and burns up in one of my strands, then I'll know that the sandalwood isn't fake.
When you light it, it will help you get into an authentic meditative state. I promise, says my friend.
It is not sandalwood that my friend imported from the Himalayas to Europe – it is a promise of healing.
But the wood is still white, and I'm not sure if this is all just a joke. It's lying there on my desk now, and my friend's cigarette is going out.
Do you have a light?
I'll light it. I promise.
