The jewelry of the Huichol, an indigenous group from Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico, symbolizes the value of authenticity for me. My family and ancestors come from this region. Growing up as a child of immigrants in the United States, I often wondered who I really was. I never seemed American enough for Americans, and I never seemed Mexican enough for Mexicans. This was a challenge I struggled with until recently. But when I realized that it doesn't matter whether I'm more Mexican than American, or more American than Mexican, I was able to accept myself. I'm proud of who I am, proud of my heritage, and proud of where I grew up.
