A second ibis

Ein zweiter Ibis

There was this wonderful shop called "The Bedouins," a place straight out of "1001 Nights": The owner, Gunna, displayed the most magnificent Egyptian fabrics, carpets, furniture, lamps, glasses, jewelry, and other oriental treasures, as if in magnificent nomad tents. She and her husband, Aladin, were extremely hospitable, so people would visit "The Bedouins" to simply drink tea with them in this dreamy atmosphere, chat, and take in the view. One day, as we were sitting there, a woman with a stroller entered the shop—she just wanted to look around. Yes, of course! After a while, Aladin got up, toured the rooms, then held the door open for the mother with the stroller and bid her a friendly farewell. He sat back down with us and told us how he had seen the woman "disappear" an ibis figurine in the stroller. During his tour, he had then placed a second ibis under the baby's blanket for the shoplifter. In an elegant way, he spared the woman the embarrassment of being caught and earned respect for himself - through his generosity.
