1945 – The war is over. Freedom at last! Not for our father, who was taken prisoner by the Americans. The men were imprisoned in camps for months. To keep them busy, the Americans gave them materials and tools for handicrafts. My father made a small globe out of casein and a Mephistopheles out of aluminum, and mounted the pieces on a wooden base. On it, he wrote: "The devil whips the whole world until it falls into a frenzy." But he also looked ahead, thinking of the time when he would return to his family, the time of regained freedom. For us daughters, he carved and polished small hearts with our initials, "H" and "U." We still wear these pendants today.
