As a student, I'm always a little short on money, but have a strong desire for freedom and to explore the world. So this summer I drove through Germany in my Skoda Fabia, with a bed and everything I need in the back.
I was very nervous, as I sometimes only see the worst in people. However, the very first morning felt liberated.
I was sitting in the back of my car with the trunk open, eating a roll from the bakery in the middle of Weimar. Suddenly, an employee from the electronics store next to me came out the door and asked, "Would you like a coffee?" To my bewildered "Yes," he brought me a coffee, with only a curt, "You can just put the cup back in." Such openness towards (poor) travelers, teenagers, and young adults, with such selflessness, left me speechless. Just a coffee, without wanting anything in return.
