One of my grandma's favorite stories, which she fondly remembers, is about a family vacation in 1976. Back then, they went with my grandpa and my father to Oberhof, Thuringia, to the large FDGB (Free Trade Union Federation) hostel. What is now the AHORN Panorama Hotel was a very popular destination at the time, and they were overjoyed to have secured a spot. With their faithful Trabant, their companion, they set off and spent two weeks full of adventure and discovery. My grandparents and my father explored the beautiful surroundings, made trips to nearby towns like Suhl, and browsed the shops, as was customary on any vacation. But on one particular day, something very special was about to happen. In the electronics department of the consumer goods store, they spotted a huge line of people, all excitedly waiting for a product—the Multi-Boy from Elbtalwerk Heidenau. This device was exactly what my grandma had been looking for for a long time. It was the all-rounder that could chop nuts, herbs, eggshells, and much more. She was thrilled and hoped to be among the lucky ones to secure one. So she forced my grandfather and father to join her in the queue. They waited patiently in the line, excited by every passing minute. The excitement was palpable when my grandmother's turn finally arrived. With a joyful heart and a smile on her face, she accepted the Multi-Boy. The Multi-Boy did not disappoint her expectations. It was easy to use, of solid quality, and seemingly indestructible. Over the years, it became an indispensable kitchen helper that accompanied my grandmother every day. Even after some 50 years, it still works perfectly, and she enjoys using it time and time again, especially in the summer. Every time she holds it in her hands, she remembers that unforgettable family vacation and the joy of finally finding the appliance she was looking for. Today, the Multi-Boy symbolizes not only a bygone era for my grandma, but also her connection to her family and the value of simple, yet high-quality things.
