Finding friends: How chance encounters become friendships

Do you know the feeling? You're new to a city, you're in a new phase of life, or you simply realize you long for deeper connections. The question of how to actually find new friends as an adult concerns many of us more than we admit. In a world full of digital connections, the longing for real, tangible closeness often remains unfulfilled. We believe the answer lies not in the next app, but in giving chance more space in our lives and taking conscious steps to create real encounters.

The lost art of chance encounters

Looking back, there used to be natural social hubs in our society. The marketplace, the village fountain, or the church were places where people met naturally, without planning it. These organic opportunities to simply get to know people have become rarer. At the same time, we're feeling a growing need to escape the ubiquitous small talk, to open up, and talk about the things that truly matter to us. These deep, authentic conversations are the breeding ground for a true friendship to develop and grow.

The great irony of our time is that countless people feel lonely and are searching, but most are waiting for someone else to take the first step. Yet, the initiative of one individual has enormous power to change an entire dynamic. This principle is impressively and humorously illustrated in the famous TED talk "How to start a movement" : It only takes one courageous person to make the first move to spark a movement and inspire others to join in.

Become the architect of your own encounters

The thought of giving up the passive, waiting attitude can seem intimidating at first. But what if you shifted your focus? Instead of frantically searching for the perfect friend, you could simply create the conditions for a good encounter. It's about provoking situations in which strangeness can turn into curiosity and an acquaintance into friendship. This change often doesn't begin with a grand gesture, but with small, conscious actions in everyday life. You have the power to actively increase the likelihood of meaningful coincidences in your life.

A simple stimulus for deeper conversations

Often we're on the cusp of a real conversation, but we lack the right words or the courage to shift the conversation from the weather to more meaningful topics. Sometimes all it takes is a small tool, a loving "nudge," to open the door to a deeper exchange. We developed our Action Cards for precisely this moment. They're a playful and unobtrusive invitation to share the values and ideas that truly matter to us, thus building a genuine, human connection more quickly.

Our mission: Creating more space for human closeness

As a non-profit organization, our core mission is to create spaces for encounters where people feel safe and inspired. The Museum of Values is a real place where people come together to explore themselves and others on a deeper level. We are proud and grateful when we see how new friendships are formed here, how conversations emerge, and how connections grow that last beyond the moment. Our partner, The Art of Embodying Change (TAEC), is also bringing this approach of fostering an appreciative and open culture through consciously designed frameworks to the corporate world to improve the quality of collaboration there.

Ultimately, the journey to meeting people nearby begins with yourself. It begins with the courage to step outside, with being open to the unexpected, and with the trust that the people around you are also seeking true connection. You are not alone in this desire. Let's create the space for it together.
