Thoughts on Values: Vivian Eckstein

Courage, Culture & Inspiration

What values are reflected in your work and why, Vivian?
"The painting Madrid al limón shows a woman squeezing lemons into a red pot in front of a light tiled wall. The picture was created during a travel scholarship in Spain lasting several months. It reflects what makes travel so enriching for me: opening myself up to impressions, people, and places, growing as a person in the process and courageously allowing myself to be irreversibly changed. For me, traveling means walking through the world with open eyes and squeezing intense, beautiful, painful, or meaningful moments like lemons, because they are precious
. I draw a lot of inspiration from this."

Artist of the Month: Vivian Eckstein
Vivian Eckstein's oeuvre includes expansive, labyrinthine installations through which she lets performers move, as well as handmade costumes, coats, and masks, which she describes as wearable objects. These are often lined with her own hair and appear as clothing in her paintings. Figurative painting is Eckstein's main focus and always the starting point for all her subsequent work. Scenes and moments emerge on the canvas that are equally composed of everyday situations and dreams or nightmarish elements.
